About Kulr

Professional color tools, free forever. No sign-up, no paywall, no compromise.

Our Mission

Kulr exists because we believe professional-grade color tools should be free and accessible to every designer, developer, and creator — regardless of budget, experience level, or team size. Color is fundamental to design, and the tools that help you work with it shouldn't be locked behind subscriptions or cluttered with ads that get in the way of your creative flow.

We built Kulr as a response to the fragmented landscape of color tools — one site for palettes, another for contrast checking, a third for gradients, a fourth for extracting colors from images. Kulr brings everything together in a single, unified toolkit that's fast, beautiful, and works entirely in your browser.

What Makes Kulr Different

Every tool on Kulr runs 100% client-side. Your images, palettes, and color data never leave your device — there are no uploads, no server processing, and no tracking of your creative work. This isn't just a privacy feature; it means Kulr is blazing fast. Color extraction happens in milliseconds using in-browser K-means clustering. Palette generation is instant. Contrast calculations are real-time.

We also take accessibility seriously. Our contrast checker supports both WCAG AA and AAA standards, with auto-suggestion of accessible alternatives when your colors don't meet the threshold. We include color blindness simulation (protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia) so you can design for everyone, not just people with typical color vision. These aren't afterthoughts — they're core features built into the foundation of every tool.

The Tools

Kulr currently offers 12 professional tools, each designed to handle a specific part of the color workflow:

  • Palette Generator — Generate harmonious color palettes with multiple algorithms including complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, and more. Lock individual colors and regenerate around them.
  • Image Color Extractor — Drop any image and extract its dominant colors using K-means clustering. Get the exact hex, RGB, and HSL values from photographs, illustrations, or screenshots.
  • Contrast Checker — Test foreground and background color combinations against WCAG 2.1 AA and AAA standards. Get real-time pass/fail results with auto-suggested accessible alternatives.
  • Gradient Builder — Create multi-stop CSS gradients with linear, radial, and conic options. Copy production-ready CSS code instantly.
  • UI Visualizer — Preview your palette on realistic dashboard, landing page, mobile app, and e-commerce mockups to see how colors work together in context.
  • Palette Explorer — Browse 240+ hand-curated palettes filterable by mood, style, season, and industry.
  • Color Picker — A precision color picker with hex, RGB, HSL, and CMYK input modes.
  • Color Names — Browse and search the complete CSS named color library with detailed information for each color.
  • Color Converter — Convert between hex, RGB, HSL, CMYK, and other color formats instantly.
  • Tailwind Colors — The complete Tailwind CSS color palette with one-click copy for class names and hex values.
  • Color Psychology — Understand the emotional and cultural associations of colors to make more intentional design decisions.
  • Brand Colors — Reference the official color palettes of 100+ popular brands with exact hex values and usage guidelines.

Built for Speed

Kulr is built with Next.js and React, optimized for performance at every layer. Pages load in under a second. Tools respond instantly. We use static generation for content pages and client-side rendering for interactive tools — the best of both worlds. The entire application is under 200KB of JavaScript (gzipped), which means it loads fast even on slow connections or older devices.

We don't use any third-party color libraries. Every algorithm — from palette generation to contrast calculation to color space conversion — is written from scratch, optimized for the browser, and tested against industry standards. This gives us full control over accuracy and performance.

Export Everything

Every palette you create can be exported in six formats: CSS custom properties, Tailwind CSS config, SCSS variables, JSON, PNG image, and shareable URL. We don't gate exports behind a paywall. You created the palette — it's yours. Copy it, download it, share it, use it however you want.

Open and Free

Kulr is free to use with no limits. There are no premium tiers, no feature gates, and no artificial restrictions. We sustain the project through minimal, non-intrusive advertising that doesn't interfere with your workflow. Every tool, every feature, every export format is available to everyone from day one.

We believe that making tools free and accessible creates better design across the entire web. When a solo developer in Lagos has access to the same color tools as a design team in San Francisco, everyone benefits from better, more accessible, more beautiful digital products.
